The Sewing Machine
Oil on Canvas
16”x20”x1/2”
This sewing machine belonged to my Grandmother in Cameroon. I came across it on my first visit since childhood in 2015. I visited the village of Bagam and stayed in my Grandfathers house who passed away a few years ago. It was a very important trip, I got to experience a part of my culture that previously was rather foreign to me. The village was fascinating and it was wonderful meeting family and friends for the first time. I love the rich orange dust that was spread throughout the village. It was interesting to imagine the hours that had gone into making and mending clothing for my fathers large family, the love that had gone into every stitch sewn. To me it signified and a strong familial connection, tying me to family members I have had the pleasure of getting to know and ones I have never met, a suture of sorts.
