Power

"Power" captures a transformative moment in my life and symbolizes some of the initial steps I took to embrace and connect with my Black identity. Deciding to expand my hair braiding practice became a source of solace and belonging for me within the black community. From this shared love for this cherished practice, a sense of unity and strength began to emerge.

Growing up in Ireland in a predominantly white community, I often felt the black side of me was neglected to the point where I believed even saying the word “Black” held negative connotations. This changed recently and I have come to accept my place within the black diasporic community. It has been an empowering journey.

The black power fist has been used as a symbol of resistance and defiance & is associated with black nationalism & pride. This year I raised my fist for the first time recognizing that there is liberation in community & a magic that is difficult to describe. There is freedom in allowing yourself connection and solidarity and safety. There is power that is black yet so full of light that can sometimes only be demonstrated by the confident raising of a fist.
