Pam in Colour
Oil and gold leaf on Canvas 24”x24”x1”
Acrylic on canvas 2024
As I reflect on the many connections with family members in recent years, this painting, inspired by the vivacity of my beautiful aunt Pamela, becomes a celebration of those bonds.
The symbol on my aunts necklace means “greatness” and is derived from the Bagam Script, in The West Reigion of Cameroon, in the village where my paternal roots are.
Aunties play a unique and invaluable role, not just in Cameroon but in many cultures across the globe, offering a blend of love, support, and wisdom that is distinct from any other relationship. Since embracing the role myself, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for its significance. I currently have the honour of doing a practicum at the Tsleil Watuth Nation school and my time working with the indigenous community has further highlighted this importance.
Beyond being caregivers or confidantes, aunties often serve as trusted mentors and sources of guidance, providing a different perspective and enriching the upbringing of their nieces and nephews and though distance does not always allow this, I strive to be a good aunty by showing up as the best version of myself, and serving as a lifelong ally. This artwork is a tribute to the cherished auntie/nibbling relationships in my life.
