Frequently asked Questions

How do you decide which art forms to use in a session?

The choice of art form is based on the client’s interests, needs, and comfort level. I will give suggestions on different activities to explore emotions and experiences creatively but ultimately it is up to you which art forms we explore.

What if I don’t feel comfortable expressing myself through art?

That’s completely okay! The therapy is adaptable, and there’s no pressure to engage in any activity that doesn’t feel right. Clients can participate at their own pace.

Can I talk during the sessions, or is it purely art-based?

Clients are welcome to talk during sessions if they wish. EXA can be a blend of creative activities and verbal processing.

How does creative expression help with emotional healing and what kind of results can I expect?

Engaging in creative expression allows people to access and process emotions in ways that words sometimes cannot. It helps reduce stress and increase self-awareness. Results vary, but many clients experience greater self-awareness, emotional release, increased confidence, and improved coping skills. Some find it easier to process trauma or complex emotions.

How long are the sessions, and how often should I come?

Sessions typically last 45mins- 1 hour. Frequency depends on the client’s needs and goals—some come weekly, biweekly, or as needed.

Do you offer virtual or home visits?

Yes! In addition to in-person sessions, I also offer home visits for clients who prefer therapy in their own space.

What materials do I need to bring, if any?

Usually, all materials are provided. However, if a client has preferred tools (such as a journal or personal art supplies), they’re welcome to bring them.

Is Expressive Arts Therapy covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your provider. It’s best to check with your insurance company to see if Registered Therapeutic Counseling or Expressive Arts Therapy is included in your plan.
