Black or white (2018)
Acrylic on Canvas 20”x14”
The painting "Black or White" encapsulates my struggle with societal expectations tied to my mixed-race heritage. Faced with the pressure to fit into predefined black and white boxes, I painted two versions of myself on the canvas – one representing perceived "whiteness" and the other, "blackness." This visual exploration aimed to highlight the absurdity of a binary choice, challenging society's narrow narratives. The piece was a way of rejecting simplistic categorizations and celebrating the richness of my mixed identity, urging acceptance beyond the confines of black and white.
